Mathew Weir’s paintings utilise fragments of pre-existing imagery, drawing on a specific tradition of eighteenth and nineteenth century decorative art; the ceramic figurine, as well as more culturally loaded objects and art historical references. Placed within textured and detailed backdrops or isolated, the object as subject is laboriously rendered in paint to explore its inherent or suggestive content. Concerned with how understanding and meanings shift and/or change through time, the focus of interpretation moves between violence and exploitation, cruelty and tenderness, death and innocence. Painting’s ability to parallel and slow down the thoughts these questions pose, enables contrasting psychological and visual elements to sit side by side.

Weir (b. 1977) graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 2004. He lives and works in London.
