Exchange to the Academy of Fine Arts

Students enrolled at a Danish or foreign art academy, art school or other artistic educational institution that offers teaching in visual arts can apply for admission as exchange or guest students at the Schools of Visual Arts.

If these conditions are not met, you must apply for ordinary admission to our BFA program.

Exchange students are students participating in and funded by ERASMUS or KUNO. Exchange agreements can be made with institutions participating in the ERASMUS or KUNO program.

Guest students come from institutions with which we have made individual agreements, such as Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Scenekunstskolen, Jutland Art Academy and Funen Art Academy.

For both exchange and guest students, you must not have graduated from your home institution prior to the period you apply for an exchange or guest stay at the Schools of Visual Arts.

Exchange and visiting students cannot extend their stay beyond the date of departure from their home institution.

Applications are processed after the application deadline. It is the teachers at the Schools of Visual Arts who assess the applications based on the quality of the submitted portfolio and the balance between incoming and outgoing students. Being nominated by your home institution is not a guarantee of admission.

Exchange students can apply for admission for one semester, with the possibility of extension. Exchange and guest students are expected, as far as possible, to follow the Academy of Fine Arts’ semester schedule.

Exchange and guest students are admitted twice a year. The application deadlines are:

  • 1 May at 11:59 (noon) for applications for the autumn semester
(the online application portal opens on 1 April)
  • 1 November at 11:59 (noon) for applications for the spring semester
(the online application portal opens on 1 October)

The autumn semester runs from 15 September to 31 January of the following year, while the spring semester runs from 1 February to 30 June.

You can apply to enrol as an exchange or guest students in the weeks prior to the application deadlines. First you must sign up as an applicant in our online application system. Once you have registered, you can create an application.

Please note that your application is only considered submitted once you have clicked “Send” at the final step of the application form.

It is possible to save the application and later return and edit it. You can edit the application until the deadline - even if you have submitted it. However, every time you edit an already submitted application, be sure to click 'send' again.

Access the application system here: Bachelor's programme or Master's programme

As a prospective applicant you must submit the following documentation:

  • A portfolio (pdf file, max 5 pages) and/or max 2 video or sound works or video footage documenting performance works or installations*
  • CV
  • Nomination (attached as pdf-file)
  • Picture of your passport

* If you are submitting video or sound works, or video documentation of performances or installations, please follow the guidelines below:

Insert a five-second “sign” (white typeface against a black background) at the beginning of each video. The sign must state your name, the title of the work, and whether the video features audio. If the video is an excerpt of a longer work, state the original length of the work.

For example: Hans Hansen – ”Title” no sound, original duration: 6 min.

Each video should have a maximum duration of one minute and five seconds (1 min 5 sec). Please note that videos without an opening “sign” will be rejected upon submission.

The video must be in the format QuickTime mpeg4/H264 in the size 1920x1080 pixels, and the size of the file must not exceed 100MB.

If you have any questions regarding the application process, please feel free to contact the Student Administration at exchange@kunstakademiet.net.

Applicants should be aware that the Academy of Fine Arts awards 30 ECTS credits for each completed semester. The 30 ECTS credits are not divided into individual activities within the semester but are granted as a whole.

Exchange at BFA level
Applicants must be able to read, speak and understand Danish (or Norwegian or Swedish) well enough to follow the teaching and other activities provided in the programme. The programme includes compulsory lessons where all teaching is conducted in Danish. Applicants must also have basic English proficiency.

Exchange at MFA level
Applicants must have sufficient fluency in English to communicate with professors, assistant professors and fellow students with ease, but there are no formal requirements for specific exam scores.

Applies only to master’s level applicants: Potential exchange and guest students apply for admission to a single programme, but since the master’s programme is divided into several professor schools, you may indicate a preference for a specific professor school.

Please send an email to exchange@kunstakademiet.net stating which professor school you wish to apply to. Please note that we cannot guarantee admission to the requested school.

All living expenses (food, housing, etc.) must be covered by the student.

The Academy of Fine Arts does not have scholarships, grants, or student housing available, and is unable to assist exchange or guest students with accommodation, finances, or related matters.

As a student, you are therefore responsible for ensuring that you have sufficient financial means before leaving your home country.

The Academy of Fine Arts are legally obliged by Executive Order no. 364 of 1. April 2019 on tuition fees for foreign students at higher education programmes in art under the auspices of the Danish Ministry of Culture, to charge tuition fees from international students who are not citizens of the EU or EEA.

The study fee is DKK 120,000 for a full year of study, corresponding to DKK 60,000 for the autumn semester (15 September to 31 January) and DKK 60,000 for the spring semester (1 February – 30 June).

Tuition fees must be paid before the semester begins. Tuition fees for a full year can be split into two payments, one for each term. Payment is done as a bank transfer to the Schools of Visual Arts’ bank account.

The Academy of Fine Arts cannot offer subsidies or grants towards covering these tuition fees.

We do not accept applications from free movers.
Free movers are students who arrange study stays abroad independently, outside of exchange agreements between educational institutions.

The Schools of Visual Arts are members of KUNO; a Nordic-Baltic association of institutes of fine art higher education. For more information about the KUNO scheme, please contact your home institution or go to KUNO's website.

Please contact your home institution (i.e. your own academy/school) for more information about the Erasmus scheme.
