About the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition
The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is one of the most important open submission exhibitions in Northern Europe, and has been held annually at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen since 1857. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition originated as an exhibition showing new works by Danish artists but now features participants from many countries. The exhibition is organised by the Charlottenborg Foundation and its board, consisting of Thomas Lindvig (visual artist), Peter Møller Rasmussen (architect), Cathrine Raben Davidsen (visual artist), Søren Rønholt (photographer), Annette Dam (jewelry artist) and Christina Augustesen (visual artist).
The exhibition allows a considerable number of artists to participate with new works and has over the years provided the first significant platform for many emerging artists, while also presenting important new pieces by more established figures. Throughout the history of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition artists, who are renowned international figures today, have either debuted or presented some of their early works, including Olafur Eliasson, Alvar Aalto, Jørn Utzon, Charlotte Haslund-Christensen, Per Kirkeby, Jasmina Cibic, Jeppe Hein, A Kasssen, Kathrine Ærtebjerg, Vilhelm Hammershøi and many others.
Open Call and application
From November 28 – December 19 2019 artists can submit works to the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2020. Works are submitted digitally through the website of the Charlottenborg Foundation – www.springexhibition.com – where a link to the online application formula and further information will be available from November 28 2019.
Submissions to the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2020 can be made by artists regardless of background, education and nationality. Applicants must be aged over 18 years and can submit up to 5 works. The works must have been produced within a period of 2 years from the application time and the works may not have been shown at other juried exhibitions in Denmark. Submitted artworks may fall into a wide range of genres associated with art, crafts, architecture and design—including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, video, film, performance, animation, visual poetry, events, sound and new media. A richly illustrated catalogue that includes all exhibiting artists will be published on the occasion of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2020.
The 2020 jury
The jury of the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is made up of artists and other art and design professionals. The jury members are selected based on their understanding of artistic practices as well as their strong international outlook and experience. In 2020 the jury consists of Kirse Junge-Stevnsborg (Director, Malmö Art Museum), Morten Løbner Espersen (craftsman), Tina Maria Nielsen (visual artist), Trine Søndergaard (visual artist) and Trude Mardal (architect).
The Solo Award and a new Talent Award
As well as selecting the works, the jury also nominates five artists for the Solo Award. The award recognises overall artistic quality and present-day relevance, and is granted on the opening night of the exhibition. The Solo Award is accompanied by an invitation to a solo exhibition at the following Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 2021 and 15.000 DKK for the realisation of the solo show. For the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2020 the Charlottenborg Foundation launches a new Talent Award that recognises an artist, which demonstrates an experimenting artistic approach and possesses an interesting potential for developing his/her artistic practise according to the jury. The winner of the Talent Award is honoured with 10.000 DKK.
Location
The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition is held every year at Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen, one of the largest spaces for contemporary art in Northern Europe. The Dutch inspired baroque palace housing the exhibition halls is an addition to the historical Charlottenborg Palace, also housing The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1883 contemporary art has been presented in the unique exhibition building. The Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition 2020 will be on show from February 2 – March 8 2020.
