Rundgang 2017

On 16 June, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts fling open the doors of Charlottenborg and the Hirschsprung block to invite everyone to our annual open house event, Rundgang

Rundgang is an annual open house event where students from the Schools of Visual Arts exhibit works and projects. Rundgang gives the students a festive opportunity to show their work to the public – and to each other.

The Rundgang event lasts three days, from 16 to 18 June.

Rundgang gives visitors a unique opportunity to delve behind the scenes at the art academy and explore what the students at the Schools of Visual Arts are getting up to. Students, educators and professors will offer visitors insight into the various projects, activities, research and teaching conducted every day at the Schools’ various laboratories, professor schools and departments.

Once again, the Schools of Visual Arts’ Institute for Research and Interdisciplinary Studies also invites everyone to its special corner of the Rundgang event, Rundgang Research . This year’s Rundgang Research explores where and how various kinds of academic and artistic research take place at the Academy.

Charlottenborg Palace and the Hirschsprung block

The setting of Rundgang comprises the historic settings of Charlottenborg Palace and the Hirschsprung block.
Named after the dowager queen Charlotte Amalie, Charlottenborg Palace was built in the late seventeenth century. The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts took over parts of the mansion when it was first founded in 1754. At that point the building was owned by the founder of the academy, king Frederick V.

A botanical garden was established in the palace gardens in 1778. When the botanical gardens were relocated to its present-day location at Nørreport a century later, the Academy used the large site formerly used for the gardens to built the exhibition venue that is now the home of Kunsthal Charlottenborg. A remnant of the original palace gardens is now known as the Sculptors’ Garden.

In the 1960s the academy expanded into rooms above the former tobacco factory A. M. Hirschsprung & Sønner and the adjacent properties in the area around Peder Skrams Gade and Heibergsgade. Today, these rooms are primarily used for Basic Studies and also house several of the academy’s laboratories.
