Artistic research practices have emerged out of an urgency to create new forms of knowledge and to carve out spaces for experiences that have previously been excluded. This talk brings together four artists who all at different times, and in very different ways have engaged in artistic research practices and PhD programs. Finn, Kaisen and Dirckinck-Holmfeld will introduce their individual projects followed by a collective conversation.
The talk will be moderated by Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld and is part of a talk-series “In a Year with Thirteen Moons”* which will explore different forms and formats of artistic research, organized by the Institute for Art, Writing and Research at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The conversation will be a collective contribution to the Special Issue of Periskop #24: Unruly: Artistic Research between Discipline and Becoming.
Maria Finn’s work revolves around memory, time and landscape. Significant for her practice is an inter-medial approach that involves several different media such as photography, drawing and video, as well as wall drawings. Language also plays a vital role, where she deconstructs existing fiction or creates new based on her own texts. These fragmented stories are presented in scenarios that convey mental states and subconscious processes. Recurring motifs are landscapes and patterns with which Finn investigates how we represent nature.
Jane Jin Kaisen is a visual artist working across video installation, film, photography, performance, and text. Recurring themes involve memory, migration, and translation at the intersection of personal and collective histories. Kaisen holds an MFA from the University of California Los Angeles, an MA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program, she is a PhD candidate at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts/University of Copenhagen. She has exhibited widely, including the Venice Biennale (IT), Haus der Kulturen der Welt and Berlinale (DE), Seoul Museum of Art, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, and the Jeju Biennale (KR), Kunsthal Aarhus and Kunsthalen Brandts (DK) ParaSite (HK), the Liverpool Biennale (UK).
Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld is a visual artist and postdoctoral researcher. She holds a PhD Time in the Making: Rehearsing Reparative Critical Practices (2015) from University of Copenhagen 2015, a MFA from Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2008) and MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths (2007). Her artistic research and practice evolve around developing a “reparative critical practice” exploring themes of affect, time and materiality often in different collective formations. In 2016 she co-founded the bar & cultural venue Sorte Firkant. She is currently the acting head of the Institute for Art, Writing and Research at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
* In a Year with Thirteen Moons is a reference to Reiner Werner Fassbinder’s famous movie of the same title and that 2020 is a year in which 13 full moons are set to grace the night sky.
