The Selfie Project is an exhibition showing 25 new paintings by Vic West. All the paintings are based on selfies sent to Vic by people who read and followed this instruction text Vic posted on instagram:
”Instructions for portrait model:
Just go on as normal. Then, when you are alone and have been for a little while - absorbed in an activity, like watching TV or looking at your phone or computer - catch yourself. Suddenly become aware of yourself without changing anything in your face or posture. A moment when you wonder “what if someone saw me now?” Without moving the muscles in your face find your phone and take a picture of yourself.”
The idea was to try and capture an intimate moment with people, which they only share with themselves and their technology, in a painted portrait. Bringing that moment into the physical world and giving it the homage it deserves.
An intimate and tender interaction with technology is at the center of Vic West’s artistic practice, as well as the mixture of classical mediums, such as painting, with digital medias, such as instagram. Vic has previously created computer games using technology like virtual reality and combined this with poetry, photography and ideas of intimacy with the self. A 3D animated short film about a friendship between the self and a digital being is another example of Vic’s work with the same theme. Vic is interested in exploring and combining all kinds of mediums to see what potentials they have, while keeping painting as a main practice.
Anna Victoria West AKA Vic West was born year 1993 in Stockholm, Sweden. They have attended a painting school in Stockholm called Pernbys Målarskola before they moved to Copenhagen to attend The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts – Schools of Visual Arts. They are now on their third year. A couple of Vic’s exhibitions include solo exhibition ”You Joined Two Virtual Planes” also at Udstillingsstedet Q (2017) and Liljevalch’s ”Vårsalongen” in Stockholm (2017).
